A Collection of Lenticular Canadian Christmas Coins

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint commenced a line of commemorative 50-cent pieces, each one featuring a Christmas or holiday-themed lenticular artwork. As you might know from reading my blog, a lenticular artwork features an image that, if you tilt the picture at a certain angle, the image itself will slightly move or show depth. So imagine this in a collection of coins.

The holiday line started in 2007, and each year the Royal Canadian Mint would produce one 50-cent piece, along with a protective capsule and a velvet box. All the coins featured the royal sovereign on one side of the coin, and the run continues to this day (with the exception of 2017, and 2019-20, when no holiday coins were minted).

I purchased my first coin from this series in 2021, when the mint produced a Canadian Pacific Holiday Train image. Because yeah, me and the Holiday Train got a thing going on. 😀

A year later, I acquired the 2022 coin, and then decided to complete the whole set.

And if you’re looking to create your own holiday themed coin collection … here’s the personal checklist. Each coin is stamped in cupronickel finish, is 35 millimeters in diameter, and comes with a custom coin box (with the exception of the 2021 Holiday Train coin, which comes with a cardboard stand).

So here’s what the checklist currently looks like.

And no, I’m not selling any of these.

At some point, I might want to create a display cabinet for them. Or at least some sort of display board.

But for now … they’re just fine in my collection as they are.

And they’ll help me get into the true holiday spirit.

Which … is just around the corner.
